In this talk, I’ll briefly go over what supported employment is, what my role is as an employment specialist, and why it’s important to employ persons with disabilities in our communities. I work for a non-profit agency called Work Opportunities. It has been around for over 50 years and started in Seattle. It expanded to Whatcom County in 2007 and has provided vocational services to adults with disabilities ever since. As an employment specialist, I work one on one with clients and try to match them to an appropriate career for their interests and abilities. I try to match the employer’s needs with the client’s in an effort to build sustainable relationships.
