What better way to feel abundance & gratitude this holiday season, than to participate in giving back to our community.

The Third Annual Whatcom Give-a-thon will be held Friday, December 2 from 1-7pm at 3990 Meridian (that’s the former Value Village building).  This event is hosting nearly 50 local non-profits, including our member The Assistance League of Bellingham.

There will be music, holiday festivities, coffee in the afternoon and early evening (+ Boundary Bay cash beer bar in the very late afternoon).  All charities will accept donations of cash/check.  Also, many need volunteer help and items such as winter clothing, food, pet food, and so on.
Give back as you Give thanks this winter.

With the media bombarding us with “Black Friday” “Cyber Monday” “Dow soars on holiday sales” and “Great Gifts for under $200,” it’s easy to lose sight of what is truly important this holiday season.  Add a dose of family dynamics, large groups in small spaces, and enough holiday parties to make your head spin, it’s a miracle anyone can sit back, relax, and enjoy authentic connections with dear ones during the holidays.

Virginal Malmquist, counselor / therapist, shares tips for Holiday Sanity – from defining what is truly important to you this holiday season to how to enjoy harmony with extended family.  Join us:

When: Thursday December 1, 2011 – 12:00pm – 1:15pm
Where: WWN weekly (no-host) lunch meeting at On Rice – Fairhaven
Presenter: Virginia Malmquist, Counselor / Therapist, Heron Reach Counseling

Virginia Malmquist, M. ED., helps individuals, couples and families create healthier, happier lives.  Sessions take place in a quiet cabin on 20 wooded acres complete with a large pond and great blue herons.  A sliding scale ensures services are affordable for all.

In a marketplace where everyone promises the lowest rates, a voice of reason stands out. Sure, you can get a low rate many places, but do you truly have the protection you want, need, and deserve. Understanding your insurance protection and having stellar service to back it up is worth much more than the cost of insurance alone.

The season is upon us!  With children dressed in Halloween costumes and frost on the early morning lawn, it is undeniably time to start thinking about holiday traditions.  One favorite holiday tradition is gift giving – be it to family, friends, co-workers, party hosts, or charitable organizations.

These being times of watching our budgets, Mary Kay has some great gift ideas that are colorful and fun — and won’t break your budget.

When: Thursday November 3, 2011 – 12:00pm – 1:15pm
Where: WWN weekly (no-host) lunch meeting at On Rice – Fairhaven
Presenter: Chris Hansen, Mary Kay Cosmetics Independent Representative

Come see some fun holiday products:  festive nail colors, three very special lipsticks where Mary Kay Inc. donates $1 to the Mary Kay Charitable Foundation for each lipstick purchased, yummy Vanilla Berry and Vanilla Mint hand creams, our “Little Gifts” trio of lip glosses — and much, much more!

Each of these gifts is well under $20.  They make great single gifts or stocking stuffers to delight & pamper those near & dear to you.

As Whatcom county residents receive their “vote by mail” ballots this week, press on the various elections and issues builds.  Two very important races that tend to draw less attention are for Whatcom County Auditor and Whatcom County Sheriff.

Whatcom Women’s Network has invited both Auditor and Sheriff candidates to dialogue on themselves and what they offer to the positions they are seeking.

At Whatcom Women’s Network, our members’ interests are as diverse as our professions.  One common value we hold is community involvement and support.  Here are some of our favorite local community events this fall:

Assistance League of Bellingham Fall Fling Fashion Show and Luncheon Fundraiser is a popular annual event for this local philanthropy.  More impact for your buck as this all-volunteer organization sends all proceeds directly to local charitable services.

Lizz Winstead “I’m Here For You Planned Parenthood” Tour at WWU PAC: Co-creator of The Daily Show and co-founder of Air America Radio, political satirist Lizz Winstead brings her razor-sharp wit and hilarious spin on current events, with all proceeds going to benefit Mt. Baker Planned Parenthood.

Into The Woods at the historic Mount Baker Theatre: On October 5th the Mount Baker Theatre begins a run of 6 bewitching performances of the Tony Award-winning musical classic Into the Woods. You’re invited to take part in the adventure as the Mount Baker Theatre celebrates a milestone – the first Main Stage self-produced, professional production in their 85-year history.

Boundary Bay Bewery gives back with two music, beverage, fundraising & more events: Support the Puget Sound Blood Center’s marrow project and Whatcom Land Trust – eat, drink, be merry, and support our community.

No doubt you’ve heard some of the hubub around a potential terminal at Cherry Point in Whatcom County for international shipping of commodities including coal.  Public discourse has drawn huge audiences charged with passion on both sides of the issue.

At WWN, we strive to serve our community by growing local businesses, supporting local charities, and fostering a network of relationships one person at a time.

Toward the goal of being fully informed citizens and supporting our community to make informed decisions, we have invited representatives of both sides of the “coal terminal debate” to share their information and perspectives in a respectful and balanced dialogue.

Please RSVP to: director {at sign} whatcomwomensnetwork.com

When: Thursday September 29th, 2011 – 12:00pm – 1:15pm
Where: WWN weekly lunch meeting at On Rice – Fairhaven
