At Whatcom Women’s Network, our members’ interests are as diverse as our professions.  One common value we hold is community involvement and support.  Here are some of our favorite local community events this fall:

Assistance League of Bellingham Fall Fling Fashion Show and Luncheon Fundraiser is a popular annual event for this local philanthropy.  More impact for your buck as this all-volunteer organization sends all proceeds directly to local charitable services.

Lizz Winstead “I’m Here For You Planned Parenthood” Tour at WWU PAC: Co-creator of The Daily Show and co-founder of Air America Radio, political satirist Lizz Winstead brings her razor-sharp wit and hilarious spin on current events, with all proceeds going to benefit Mt. Baker Planned Parenthood.

Into The Woods at the historic Mount Baker Theatre: On October 5th the Mount Baker Theatre begins a run of 6 bewitching performances of the Tony Award-winning musical classic Into the Woods. You’re invited to take part in the adventure as the Mount Baker Theatre celebrates a milestone – the first Main Stage self-produced, professional production in their 85-year history.

Boundary Bay Bewery gives back with two music, beverage, fundraising & more events: Support the Puget Sound Blood Center’s marrow project and Whatcom Land Trust – eat, drink, be merry, and support our community.

No doubt you’ve heard some of the hubub around a potential terminal at Cherry Point in Whatcom County for international shipping of commodities including coal.  Public discourse has drawn huge audiences charged with passion on both sides of the issue.

At WWN, we strive to serve our community by growing local businesses, supporting local charities, and fostering a network of relationships one person at a time.

Toward the goal of being fully informed citizens and supporting our community to make informed decisions, we have invited representatives of both sides of the “coal terminal debate” to share their information and perspectives in a respectful and balanced dialogue.

Please RSVP to: director {at sign} whatcomwomensnetwork.com

When: Thursday September 29th, 2011 – 12:00pm – 1:15pm
Where: WWN weekly lunch meeting at On Rice – Fairhaven
Guest Presenters: Bob Ferris, ReSources & Craig Cole, Gateway Pacific Terminal

Although our members will certainly have personal opinions on the topic, as an organization we strive to remain politically neutral and present a fair opportunity to explore the issues from multiple perspectives.  We invite you to join us.

In honor of National MIA/POW Recognition Day (September 16th)

It was March 11, 1968 when Ann Holland’s husband, Melvin Holland, went missing on a secret mission in Laos.  At age 28 with 5 small children ages 4 to 10 years, Ann’s world was changed forever.  Come hear her moving story.

When: Thursday September 15th, 2011 – 12:00pm – 1:15pm
Where: WWN weekly lunch meeting at On Rice – Fairhaven
Guest Presenter: Ann Holland

“One of the Vietnam War’s most closely guarded secrets — a highly classified U.S. radar base in the mountains of neutral Laos — led to the disappearance of a small group of elite military personnel, a loss never fully acknowledged by the American government.

Now, thirty years later, one book recounts the harrowing story — and offers some measure of closure on this decades-old mystery. … The wives of the eleven servicemen were warned in no uncertain terms never to discuss the truth about their husbands. But one wife, Ann Holland, refused to remain silent.”

“Buy Low, Sell High”

We all know the old adage to making money in the financial markets, but do we do it?

When the market is strong, many are eager to invest, but when it drops, we shy away with fear.  Unfortunately, this results in buying high & selling low!  “The best plan is a consistent one” says Judy Paulson, Certified Financial Planner with Paulson Financial Services.

Dips & Drops can be quite advantageous to those ready to invest in their futures.  Working with a Certified Financial Planner will assist you in smart asset allocation, effective diversification, and matching your investment strategy to your goals, risk tolerance, and timeline.

Eager to mentor newer investors in building a solid financial future – whether that includes monthly budgeting, college planning, or long-term retirement – Judy says, “You can get started with as little as $50/month.”

Contact Judy Paulson to find out how she can help you build your future.
